Yesterday saw the opening match of the season for the Stephen Perse Cricket 1st XI, facing the Perse away at the Upper.
After losing the toss, we were put in to field in scorching conditions - 17OC - however, after excellent bowling from our openers, Trinity and Sally, we had them one wicket down by the end of the first four overs; Sally having taken her inaugural wicket for the team. This wicket, along with some stand-out fielding from Henriette and Anna, prevented the Perse’s run rate from accumulating to more than 5 runs an over, despite some excellent batting from Freya Watrasiewicz. Consistent bowling from Emma, Siobhan and Alice around the mid-point of the game ensured that their run rate did not escalate further, and a further two wickets taken by myself towards the latter stage of their innings continued to aid this cause. Our fielding was summed up in one moment with a brilliant pick-up and release from Rachel, running out one of their more set batsmen, leaving the Perse to reach just 89-4 off their 20 overs. Our brilliant fielding and bowling effort meant that we had a score below par to chase, given the wicket and conditions. However, we knew at this point that the game was only half done - we still had to score the runs.
We got off to a solid start with Trinity and myself opening up, however, due to some accurate fielding on their part, Trinity was run-out for 4. Despite this we were still up with the required rate which gave Lucy and myself time to consolidate and regroup before pushing on to reach the target. After a couple of big overs we required just ten runs to win, however, unfortunately our partnership was not to remain until the end, with Lucy falling to a near-perfect delivery on 24 and the partnership well over 50. From this point we cruised to an 8 wicket victory, with myself and Rachel both not out on 34 and 2 respectively.
Overall it was a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting game and sets us up brilliantly for the re-match later in the term. A great team effort all round - hopefully we can keep up our 100% winning record throughout the rest of the season.
