Students transformed themselves into disco divas, hippies and Harry Potter yesterday as they held their biennial charity event to raise money for Barnardo's children's charity.

Barnardo's Day saw the Senior School taken over by student fundraisers and decked out in themes ranging from space to St Trinians, celebrities to festivals, and Halloween to Christmas.

Hippies lined the halls singing kumbaya, Disney princesses held a dance party and rollerskating waitresses were on hand to sell people delicious homemade cakes, all raising money for Barnardo's.

Elsewhere, students and visitors could take part in apple bobbing at the Harry Potter stall, throwing a sweet in Mary Berry's mouth to win a cake at The Great British Bake Off stall, and finding sweets in the grunge at the space stall.

The Stephen Perse Foundation has been supporting Barnardo's, a national charity which aims to transform the lives of the country's most vulnerable children, since 1947 and has so far raised £65,000.

David Walker, Head of the Senior School, said: "Every Barnardo's event our students hold gets bigger, better and brighter than the last. This year we have seen the hall turn into a Hollywood red carpet, our own Mary Berry judging delicious cakes, and lots of challenges for students to take part in,

"This is our 71st Barnardo's Day and the whole school gets involved and has fun for an important charity. We are delighted to continue to add to our £65,000 total to help vulnerable children around the country."

Tricia Kelleher, Principal of the Stephen Perse Foundation, said: "We are very proud to continue to support Barnardo's as we have since 1947 and help to make a real difference for vulnerable children around the country.

"This year's event was more exciting and fun than ever and we can't wait to find out how much we have raised."

Students will be able to find out the grand total for the event when they return from half term at the end of October.

Sue Westbury, Barnardo's Head of Regional Fundraising South, said: "We are delighted with the long-standing support from the Stephen Perse Foundation. The event gets bigger and better and continues to raise a fantastic amount of money for the charity.

"We are extremely grateful that the school supports us in this way and has raised so much over the years to help disadvantaged children across the UK."
